Speaking, Guest Lecturing & Media Advocacy: Trauma, Recovery & The Frontline

Scott Hembruff is available for guest lecturing, keynote speaking, panel discussions, and media interviews on the realities of Post-Traumatic Stress Injury (PTSI), Operational Stress Injuries (OSI), and the systemic barriers to trauma recovery.

Bringing over two decades of frontline experience and the lived reality of navigating complex trauma, Scott delivers raw, grounded, and educational presentations designed to bridge the gap between clinical theory and frontline survival.

My Background & Lived Experience

My perspective isn't just academic; it is forged from over 20 years in public safety, emergency response, and security. I have served as a volunteer firefighter, volunteer medic, special constable, law enforcement K-9 handler, mobile security supervisor, and licensed private investigator. Throughout my career, I managed high-stakes, traumatic incidents—from violent crisis interventions to vital-signs-absent (VSA) emergency calls in chaotic environments.

That steady accumulation of trauma eventually led to my own clinical diagnosis of complex PTSI and OSI. When I reached out for help, I collided with a broken administrative system. I discovered that life-saving therapeutic tools—specifically psychiatric service dogs—were locked behind multi-year waitlists, $30,000 price tags, and rigid corporate gatekeeping.

Instead of accepting the status quo, I founded The Havoc Act (The Havoc Project) to force legislative reform and harmonize provincial law with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA). My ongoing mission is to ensure that medical necessity—not corporate pedigrees—dictates a responder's access to recovery.

Qualifications & Clinical Grounding

Beyond lived experience, my presentations are anchored in established crisis management frameworks. My qualifications include:

  • Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM): Certified in providing structured psychological first aid and peer support. CISM focuses on stabilizing emotional states, normalizing stress reactions, and mitigating the immediate psychological impact in the direct aftermath of a traumatic event.

  • Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI): Certified in advanced verbal de-escalation, somatic regulation, and safely managing high-arousal or disruptive behaviors.

  • Founder of Advanced Rescue Solutions: Over 20 years of experience delivering technical rescue, safety training, and consulting services to professionals.

Core Speaking Topics

  • The Reality of PTSI/OSI on the Frontlines: Moving beyond the textbook to understand the physiological and psychological impacts of hypervigilance, moral injury, and repeated trauma exposure.

  • Systemic Retraumatization & Institutional Gatekeeping: How administrative frameworks (like WSIB, ODSP, and municipal permit offices) actively traumatize injured personnel, and how to advocate for systemic change.

  • Trauma-Informed Care in Practice: What it actually means to build safe, predictable, and empowering environments for trauma survivors in medical, academic, and workplace settings.

  • Service Dogs & Somatic Stabilization: The neurobiology of how task-trained psychiatric service dogs actively interrupt dissociative states and night terrors, and the fight for legislative equity in Ontario.

Audiences & Booking

I tailor my messaging to fit the exact needs of your audience, organization, or readership:

  • Academic Institutions: Community colleges, university psychology programs, and emergency services recruits (paramedic, fire, police programs) preparing for the realities of the job.

  • First Responder Agencies: Active departments, peer support teams, and leadership boards looking to modernize their trauma response and mental health protocols.

  • Healthcare Professionals: Conferences and training events for psychologists, psychotherapists, and clinical social workers seeking a frontline perspective on trauma-informed care and clinical autonomy.

  • Media & Press: Available for interviews, podcast appearances, and expert commentary on mental health, PTSD advocacy, and legislative reform for public safety personnel.
