The Rescuer’s Journey:
Finding Calm in the Storm
For over 25 years, my identity was forged in the high-pressure environments of emergency service. As a commercial pilot, firefighter, and decorated Emergency Medical Technician, I operated at the intersection of life-saving action and technical precision. My career was defined by "grace under pressure"—whether managing airside safety at Canada’s busiest aviation hubs or performing critical medical interventions in remote wilderness settings.
However, a lifetime on the front lines carries an invisible weight. Like many first responders, the cumulative exposure to critical incidents eventually took its toll. I realized that the very attributes that made me successful—hyper-vigilance, extreme focus, and a "mission-first" mindset—were the same factors contributing to my experience with PTSD.

The Transition: A New Way to Lead
A significant service-related injury served as a turning point, requiring me to step back from traditional frontline roles. While this transition initially presented a challenge to my identity, it ultimately provided the clarity needed to evolve. I realized that my value wasn't just in my physical ability to perform a rescue, but in the decades of specialized knowledge, leadership, and survival strategies I had mastered.
Rather than stepping away from the first responder community, I chose to lean further into it. I understood that for those of us with PTSD, the greatest hurdle is often the loss of the "mission"—the feeling of no longer being part of a team or having a practical outlet for our skills.

Why I Founded the Toronto Peer Rescue Sailing Team
I founded the Toronto Peer Rescue Sailing Team to bridge the gap between recovery and professional capability. I am deeply passionate about this cause for three reasons:
-
Peer-Led Credibility: First responders are often reluctant to seek support from those who haven't "walked the line." Because this group is founded and operated by a peer with deep technical expertise, we maintain a level of trust and operational credibility that traditional support groups lack.
-
Skill Preservation and Training: We don't just provide support; we provide purpose. By integrating rescue training and maritime operations, we allow members to maintain their professional edge. It is about proving that a diagnosis of PTSD does not end your ability to contribute, lead, or train.
-
The Maritime Sanctuary: Sailing is the ultimate metaphor for managing PTSD. It requires a calm head, teamwork, and the ability to read an ever-changing environment. On Lake Ontario, we find a unique form of "operational peace"—using the water to reset the nervous system while staying engaged in a high-skill activity.
Today, my mission is to show that a first responder with PTSD is not "broken"—we are simply transitioning to a different kind of service. Through the Toronto Peer Rescue Sailing Team, I am dedicated to helping my peers reclaim their confidence, their skills, and their peace of mind on the open water.
