WILDERNESS FIRST RESPONDER

(WFR) COURSE:

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Q1: What is a Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certification?

A: The WFR is an 80-hour certification that trains individuals to handle medical emergencies in remote settings where definitive medical care is hours or days away. It goes beyond urban first aid by teaching extended care, environmental medicine, and decision-making for prolonged evacuations. Our course follows Wilderness Medical Society (WMS) standards and results in a nationally recognized certification valid for 3 years.

Q2: How is this different from a standard First Aid/CPR course?

A: While urban courses focus on "load and go" with short transport times, WFR teaches "stay and play" with an emphasis on:

  • Extended patient care (hours to days)

  • Environmental emergencies (hypothermia, heat illness, altitude)

  • Improvisation with limited resources

  • Evacuation planning and decision-making

  • Protocol adaptation based on time/distance constraints

Q3: Who is this course designed for?

A: This course is ideal for:

  • Outdoor guides, instructors, and trip leaders

  • Search and Rescue team members

  • Backcountry rangers and conservation officers

  • Expedition team members

  • Adventure racers

  • Serious backpackers, climbers, and paddlers

  • Remote workers (mining, forestry, research)

  • Anyone who travels or works beyond quick 911 access

Q4: What certification will I receive?

A: Successful graduates receive:

  • Wilderness First Responder certification (valid 3 years)

  • CPR/AED certification (valid 2 years)

  • Optional: Advanced Wilderness First Aid equivalency documentation

  • Digital and printed certificates

  • Wallet card

Q5: What does the "hybrid" format mean?

A: Our course combines:

  • 35 hours of mandatory online pre-study (completed before in-person session)

  • 45 hours of in-person training over 5 consecutive days

  • This format maximizes hands-on practice time while ensuring you arrive with essential knowledge

Q6: What happens during the online pre-study?

A: The online component includes:

  • Access to our learning management system

  • Video lectures, readings, and interactive exercises

  • Chapter quizzes to check understanding

  • Case studies and virtual scenarios

  • Discussion forums with instructors and peers

  • Final pre-test that must be passed before attending in-person

Q7: How much time should I budget for the online portion?

A: Plan for 15-20 hours per week over 2-3 weeks. The content is self-paced but must be completed before the in-person session begins.

Q8: What if I'm not tech-savvy?

A: We provide technical support and have designed the platform to be user-friendly. Alternative arrangements can be made for those with limited internet access—contact us at least 4 weeks before your course.

A: No previous medical training is required. However, participants must:

  • Be at least 16 years old (minors require parental consent)

  • Complete all online pre-study before arrival

  • Be physically able to kneel, lift, and participate in outdoor scenarios

  • Submit required medical/waiver forms 2 weeks before course

Q11: I'm not very fit. Can I still participate?

A: Yes. While there is physical activity, we accommodate various fitness levels. You'll be carrying equipment, kneeling for patient care, and participating in outdoor scenarios. If you have specific concerns, contact us to discuss accommodations.

Q12: I have a disability/medical condition. Can I take this course?

A: Absolutely. We strive to make our courses accessible. Please contact us before registering to discuss your specific needs. All medical information is confidential and helps us ensure your safety and success.

Q13: What's the minimum age?

A: 16 years with parental consent.

Q14: What should I bring?

A: We provide a detailed, season-specific packing list. Key items include:

  • ALL SEASONS: Old clothes for scenarios (will get stained with moulage), sturdy footwear, rain gear, water bottles, headlamp

  • SUMMER: Sun protection, lightweight layers, insect repellent

  • WINTER: Insulated layers, waterproof boots, warm hat/gloves

  • SPRING/FALL: Versatile layering system, waterproof gear

  • Personal medications and any required medical devices

Q15: Will my clothes get ruined?

A: Possibly. Theatrical moulage makeup can stain. We strongly recommend bringing 2-3 sets of old clothing you don't mind getting dirty or damaged. Many students visit thrift stores for scenario clothes.

Q16: What about food and accommodation?

A:

  • Food: Meals are NOT provided unless specified in your course description. Bring lunch/snacks each day. We'll have refrigerator/microwave access.

  • Accommodation: Not included. We can provide a list of nearby lodging options ranging from camping to hotels.

Q17: What happens in bad weather?

A: We train in all conditions unless safety is compromised. We have indoor backup space but will utilize appropriate outdoor settings whenever possible—this is part of wilderness medicine training! Come prepared for Ontario's variable weather.

Q18: Is there homework during the in-person days?

A: Evenings are generally free for rest, study, or optional skills practice. The evening before the final exam is a mandatory review session.

Q19: How will I be evaluated?

A: Certification requires:

  1. Online pre-study completion (80% on all quizzes)

  2. Written exam (80% minimum score)

  3. Practical exam (pass all critical criteria stations)
