After the Sirens: Toronto 1st Responder Peer Group
About
About This Group (Overview & Description)
The shift ends, but the sirens don't always stop.
Welcome to After the Sirens. We are a Toronto-based peer support community dedicated to first responders navigating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Operational Stress Injuries (OSI), compassion fatigue, and burnout.
When you wear the uniform, you are expected to be the one who fixes the crisis. But when the uniform comes off, carrying the weight of those calls can be isolating. You are not alone. This group was created by first responders, for first responders. We know what it’s like to walk in those boots, and we are here to provide a judgment-free, confidential space to talk, listen, and heal.
Who This Group is For:
Paramedics, Firefighters, and Police Officers
911 Dispatchers and Communications Staff
ER Nurses and Physicians
Corrections Officers and Veterans
Whether you have a formal PTSD diagnosis, are navigating the WSIB process, or are simply feeling the heavy toll of the job, you belong here.
What to Expect:
Shared Experiences: Honest conversations about the realities of the job and its impact on our lives.
Resource Sharing: Tips on navigating WSIB claims, finding culturally competent therapists, and updates on advocacy like the Havoc Act 2026 for service dogs.
Coping Strategies: Peer-tested advice for managing triggers, improving sleep, and protecting your family life.
Group Guidelines & Rules
To keep this space safe for everyone, all members must agree to the following:
Strict Confidentiality (The Vault): What is shared here, stays here. Do not screenshot, share, or discuss member posts outside of this group.
Trigger Warnings & "Low-Res" Details: We all know the reality of the calls. To protect each other from secondary trauma, please avoid highly graphic descriptions of scenes or calls. Keep details "low-resolution." If discussing a sensitive topic, please put [TRIGGER WARNING] at the top of your post.
Respect the Journey: Everyone's trauma and recovery look different. No judgment, no tough-guy acts, and no minimizing someone else’s experience.
This is Peer Support, Not Therapy: We are peers walking the same path, not clinical psychologists. If you are in immediate crisis, please reach out to professional resources. (In crisis? Call Boots on the Ground at 1-833-677-2668 or dial 988).
No Solicitation: This is a safe haven. Please do not sell products, therapies, or services.
